Wet Felted Hat Class

Participants will learn to create a felted, sculpted hat, custom fit for their head size and shape.  Class will include the basics of building a resist based on measurements, basic design options, layout of wool fiber, embellishment, & steps in wet felting and fulling. Then, each person will shape and sculpt their hat as they see fit, with guidance from the instructor.  Instruction will be given on final finishing details, which will be completed at home, after the hat has dried.  

Materials provided include: resist/pattern material, various colors of merino wool fiber, petersham ribbon, soap, bits of fabrics and other fiber for embellishment, plastic sheeting, bubble wrap, pool noodles, bands for tying. 

Please bring:

Clean pail for water

3 old bath or beach size towels

Clips or pins to hold hat in final shape (plastic quilting clips work best; binder clamps or clothes pins are good alternatives; a dozen or so should suffice.)

Tape measure

Permanent sharpie marker

Non-fabric scissors

Paper & pencil if you’d like to take notes

Lots of energy, as felting is a physical exercise

Wear shoes for standing for long periods

Bag lunch, water to stay hydrated

Any bits of natural (silk, bamboo, ramie, tencel, linen, etc.) yarn or open-weave fabric you may want to use for embellishment (at the discretion of the instructor)

Class size is limited to 8 people. Beginner through advanced felters are welcome.
